You say in the improvements list for the RS-CNC that there is room for machine enlargements -

# Would a machinable surface of X = 550mm \ Y = 1100mm \ Z = 75mm be possible and what should I keep in mind when enlarging the 'Y' of the machine?

Yes you can enlarge the machine, you don't need modify the firmware !
